Fear of LHINs stops Huron East from making
annual donation to hospital foundation

Fear of the new provincial Local
Health Integration Network (LHIN)
system is causing Huron East coun-
cil to withhold its annual donation
of $2,000 to the Seaforth
Community Hospital (SCH)
Foundation for new equipment'
"We're so concerned we don't want
our municipally -raised money to go
some place hours away by the LHIN
than we're actually taking it away
from our local hospital," said Grey.
Coun. Mark Beaven.
The issue arose at Monday night's
council meeting when Tuckersmith
Coun. Larry McGrath circulated a
Canadian Press story quoting
Conservative Leader John Tory that
the LHINs legislation gives the
Health Minister powers to transfer
charitable donations from a hospital
that's being close to another hospi- •
tal.
"I'm concerned that money
fundraised here might be going out
of town," he said.
"I hope foundations are really
looking at this," added Seaforth
Coun. Joe Steffler. "I don't think
anyone wants to see our equipment
go to Wiarton and that's a possibili-
ty."
McGrath said he wants to see a
policy created reverting donations
back to the municipality if the hos-
pital ever needs to be closed. Until
then, he said he'd rather keep dona-
tions to the Seaforth Hospital foun-
dation in the municipal bank
account unless specifically needed
by the hospital.
McGrath added he didn't want to
penalize the local hospital.
"Council has concerns that LHINs
t om 4 ; -i -• i ., ... 7.174" .`
can take Qur money. LHINs scare
the hell out of me," said Steffler.
"The big city doesn't care about
rural Ontario. I'm sick of back door
3 a.m. votes," said McGrath, refer-
ring to the push by the province to
get the LHINs legislation passed.
'Council passed a motion request-
ing a meeting the representatives of
the SCH Foundation to discuss its
annual grant of $2,000.
Beaven warned council that by
taking this course of action Huron
East will be "making political waves
across the province."
