Huron East worries about county competition
Susan Hundertmark
Plans by Huron County to begin
an economic development commit-
tee have Huron East councillors a
little worried about competition.
"Is there a risk of the county being
in competition with our own eco-
nomic development efforts? It could
be detrimental," said Grey Coun.
Mark Beaven.
Huron East is one of two of the
nine municipalities in Huron
County with its own economic
development officer.
Beaven pointed to a recent pro-
posal by Huron County to build an
ethanol plant in four potential loca-
tions in Huron, including one in
Seaforth. The other three proposed
sites in Huron County included
Goderich, Hensall and South
Huron.
"Were the powers that be at the
county level not putting 100 per
cent effort into the Seaforth loca-
tion? It's a fear I have," said Beaven.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan
expressed the same concerns about
favouritism towards specific areas
of the county.
"I'd have both hands voting (for a
county economic development
department) if it will treat everyone
in the county fairly," he said.
He added that Huron East's eco-
nomic development officer and the
county's economic development offi-
cer going after the same projects
could be a waste of money.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler said
he supported economic development
for the county. .
"Economic development for the
county is a great thing and can
work in conjunction with local eco-
nomic development. Plants like
Volvo have an impact on all of
Huron County, not just Goderich,"
he said.
Mayor Joe Seili said he had con-
cerns about the
county only

St. James students send hope
to dying 13 -year-old Chatham boy
A large envelope jammed with hundreds of
get well cards was sent by St. James students
to a 13 -year-old Chatham boy with an inoper-
able brain tumour the day he died.
"We were shocked to hear he'd died. We
didn't realize it was that close to the end,"
says teacher Gloria Marcy who initiated the
project.
Marcy saw a segment on A -Channel news
and a story in the London Free Press about
13 -year-old Myles McLellan, of Chatham, who
was asking for a card for each day of the four
years he'd battled brain cancer.: -
"We decided our school should
make some cards," says St. James
student Rachel Askett.
McLellan received over 8,000 cards
by his birthday on Feb. 9, a week
before he died.
Marcy says the students at .St.
James will now be sending a condo-
lence card to the McLellan family
along with a $100 donation to the
Canadian Cancer Society after rais-
ing the money in a Valentine's Day

While the get well cards never reached the
boy before his death, ; Marcy says she's glad
the school created more than 200 cards.
"He touched a lot of lives," says Marcy of
McLellan.
"And, he's raised $70,000 for cancer, the top
fundraiser in Canada for the second time,"
says St. James student Emily Vincent.
Cards created by St. James students and
their parents were filled with best wishes,
prayers and encouragement for McLellan.

$200,000 for one year towards an
effort to promote all of Huron
County.
"Unless they lock themselves into
a three-year plan, the money will go

$200,000 won't do much if it's not

Seili assured council that he is on.
