Picking appropriate music for atmosphere important: wedding planner
J
by Marc Hula
Planning the perfect wedding is
never easy and it requires decision,
after decision, after decision.
Choosing etWeen live music and a
disc jockey at your wedding reception
can be one of the more difficult deci-
sions.
According to area wedding planner
Trisha Renner choosing between live
music and a DJ depends on what
type of atmosphere you want to cre-
ate.
As well, in smaller, rural areas such
as Huron County some of the choices
can be taken out of your hands.
"In our area - Huron County - it's
easiest to pick a DJ," Renner said.
"Bands play more garage -based
music."
She added that DJs can also provide
more of a variety in the type of music
they can supply.
Another strike against live music is
that receptions can go on for four or
five hour, requiring performers to take
breaks, while DJs can continually play
music.
Sharon Johnston is a local harpist
who performs in 20 to 30 weddings
each year.
"The harp is an instrument that is
very much in demand for weddings,"
she said.
However, Johnston mainly plays
during the ceremony, not the recep-
tions. Even so, she is a fan of live
music at receptions.
"Live music gives a real personal
feel," she said.
However, Johnston added that mak-
ing the decision could ultimately come
down to the money factor. She said
DJs are typically much cheaper than
live performers.
Renner agreed, although she added
that some DJs with more complex
shows can also be expensive.
Both women recommended booking
live performers and DJs at least six
months in advance.
"They should call as soon as possi-
ble, really," Johnston said, adding that
the summer months fill up quickly
and should certainly be booked at least
a year in advance.
