Canadians farmers could benefit
from the United States' dependence
on oil, but just not for a few years,
the president of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture told area
farmers recently.
Ron Bonnett told Perth and Huron
County farmers, at the Dublin
Community Centre last Thursday
that within the next couple of years
the U.S could stop exporting their
corn all together.

farmer Wayne Hamilton, who is also
a. director with the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture.
Hamilton said there is a lack of a
competitive prices for their corn
that is being used in ethanol plants
in the province.
"We can grow more corn, but we
need better prices. We don't need
more bandaids," he said.
Under the U.S. Farm Bill, the U.S.
government pays back farmers the
difference in the price they sold
their corn for, and what the govern-
ment thinks it could have sold for.
Because the U.S. is so dependent
on oil, U.S. farmers could make
more money selling their crops to
U.S. ethanol plants, as opposed to
Canadian plants.
If this 'was to happen, simple sup-
ply and demand would benefit
Canadian farmers.
With a major supplier no longer
providing corn, Canadian ethanol
plants would have no choice but to
pay Canadian farmers.
The risk management program,
which farmers are pushing the gov-
ernment to implement, would use a
similar system as the U.S. Farm
Bill.
