School board offering agricultural co-op program
The Avon Maitland District
School Board (AMDSB) is offering a
one -of -a -kind program for students
interested in an agriculture -related
career.
The online Agricultural Co-op
Program is in its second year and
has grown to have 16 participants,
up from nine.
"The ideal student is one who has
completed their compulsory courses
and needs three to five elective pro-
grams to graduate," said online
agricultural co-op teacher Trevor
Riehl.
It is a three -credit program, with
students required to complete 110
hours per credit. It also allows the
student to work full days at their
placement.
"It's very similar to traditional co-
op, except they are in agriculture -
related placements," Riehl said.
"They do regular log sheets, they do
regular assignments. It's just done
over the internet."
Besides the traditional co-op
assignments like resume writing,
cover letters and health and safety,
they also focus on nutrient manage-
ment and pesticide handling and
control.
Riehl said they're also looking into
getting certification courses for stu-
dents in chainsaw safety, pesticide
handling, fall arrest, forklift and
ATV training.
Students are
required to com-
plete an indepen-
dent study on
any work-related
topic that meets
the teacher's
approval.
Riehl said

sheets, handed

co-op students have been some of
the best he's seen in terms of con-
tent and detail.
As far as Riehl is, aware, the
online agricultural co-op program is
the first of its kind and he's happy
with the success.
"We're in our second year and
we've done well. The students are
enjoying the program and we finally-
have
nallyhave something in place at the sec- -
ondary school level to prepare stu-
dents for agricultural careers."
Riehl said about half the students
are interested in pursuing work on
the family farm and the other half
want to attend the local agriculture
college.
"My intentions are to make ' them
more employable," he said.
Any student interested in the pro-
gram can talk to their guidance
counsellor, call Riehl at (519) 273-
