Anne Lake, a member of the South West LHIN, said, "we have a good system in this area." The South West LHIN 'spans from parts of Bruce and Grey Counties to Huron, Perth, Oxford, Middlesex, Elgin and Norfolk Counties. Lake, who has served on the hospital board both at Stratford General and Seaforth Community Hospital,; said she applied to be part of the LHIN board. Members possess rel- evant expertise, experi- ence, leadership skills, and have an under- standing of local health issues, needs and prior- ities. "This is a really important opportunity to be involved in the process to decide where health care., is going in the future," said Lake, adding, "we will have the opportunity to tell the Ministry of Health what we need to make this system work." The .objectives of. LHINs are to manage health system plan- ning, coordination and funding at the local level, engage the com- munity in local health system planning and setting of priorities. As well, they aim to improve the accessibili- ty of health services to all people to move more easily through the health system by the greater integration of services and bring eco- nomic efficiencies to delivery of health ser- vices, promoting service innovation, improving, quality of care, and making the health care system more sustain- able and accountable. "It gives me a chance to give back to the communi- ty," said Lake, of Fullarton, who was recently appointed a board member. Members can serve a term of up to three years. "I'm willing to go at this with an open mind. LHINs have worked okay in other provinces before and we can make this work for us by learning from their mis- takes," said Lake. "It is up to the local health care providers to come up with the solutions to the challenges we face," she said. "We are looking to make this sustainable for everyone and get the great- est bang for the buck, so to speak." Lake said health care providers will have to "look long and hard" at the sys- tem to identify what's miss- ing and what improvements can be made. "We are going to encour- age health care providers to work together to fill in the gaps," she said. Because they are run at the local level, Local Health Integration Networks will be much better able to understand the needs and priorities of their communi- ties and of the people who- live ho-live there, said Lake. The needs include those of hospitals, community care access centres, home care, long-term care, mental health, community health centres as well as addiction and community support ser - vices. The roles of LHINs will be phased in over time. They will begin by working with the local community and health care providers to set priorities and plan health services in their area. They would then move to integrating and co-ordinat- ing local health services, and eventually, to determin- ing and providing funding and. resources. • Ain OF THE WEEK "YOUR RENOVATION AND HOME SPECIALISTS!'
