HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2006-02-15, Page 3News Huron- East takes first look at its 2006 budget From Page 1 Beaven remarked that Huron East has a "very healthy reserve fund" and Knight agreed, saying the current reserve would let Huron East "go a whole year without taxa- tion" for the municipal portion of the tax bill. Knight added, however, that the municipali- ty needs to keep adding to its reserves if it wants to build a new library in Brussels or a new recreation centre in Vanastra. "We likely don't have enough in reserves if our building study says we need $1 million over the next five years," he said. The seven per cent wage increase to Huron East staff creates an increase in salaries of $126,000, which Knight pointed out will sig- nificantly impact budgets at the three recre- ation centres and daycare centre. He said budgets at all four would have to increase by at least 30 per cent to cover the salary increase. Another stress on the arena budgets is the rising cost of hydro. Knight expressed some concern about how Morris-Turnberry,. a partner in the Brussels Morris and Grey Community Centre, would respond to a 30 per cent increase but Beaven responded he thought Morris-Turnberry should pay the same percentage increase as Huron East. "I don't want Huron East to be the nice guy just because we've put ourselves in a better financial position than those around us," he saidleaven added - hat increases to salary will ut Huron East emloyees in line with p Pmployees throughout the county."If that's justifi- ■ction for us, it should be justifi- cation for them," he said. Over $1 mililon in road work proposed for 2006 Susan Hundertmark The reconstruction of Coleman and Crombie Streets in Seaforth, along with new storm sewers, could be included in the 2006 Huron East budget. Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight told council that since a major road pro- ject costing $217,818 was completed on King Street in Brussels in 2005, it should be Seaforth's turn for a similar project. The Coleman/Crombie Street reconstruction is budgeted to cost $257,000, with the accompanying storm sewers budgeted at $95,000. Also planned is" tarring and chip- ping five to six kilometres of Front Road in Tuckersmith at a cost of $135,000, resurfacing a portion of a number of Egmondville streets including Anne, George, Stapleton and Second Streets at a cost of $45,000, tarring and chipping Morrison Line at a cost of $24,000 and a spot repair on MacLellan Drive in Brucefield at a cost of $1,000. Tuckersmith Coun Bill DeJong suggested that all of Front Road be tarred and . chipped since the plan Corrections The Ballad of Stompin' Tom, writ- ten by Dave Scott, runs from June 27 to Aug. 12 at the Blyth Festival, not July 27 to Aug. 12, as was reported in last week's Expositor. The deck at the Lions Pool has dropped eight inches, not feet, as was reported in last week's edition of the Huron Expositor. The Legion public speaking con- test is on Feb. 19, not Feb. 18. leaves two kilometres in gravel before Vanastra. "I'd rather do the whole road and be done with it," he said. In Grey, the second lift on five kilometres of Brandon Road, start- ing in Ethel is budgeted at $150,000. Grey Coun. Alvin McLellan said the road needed to be repaired to save it. In McKillop, the second lift of 6.6 kilometres on Hullett-McKillop Road is budgeted at $180,000 with culvert repairs on that road budget- ed at $75,000. As well, the budget proposes $10,000 to pave the approaches of railway crossings at Hannah Line and Kinburn Line. Total costs budgeted for proposed road, bridge and storm sewer work for 2006 are $1,017,000. 11 New Room in Every Can For a smooth, rich finish of exceptional beauty, depend on Manor Halls premium interior latest paints.
