Bluewater council
expresses views on tax
deferral for farmers
Crystal Stewart
The issue of farmland taxes being deferred until the
second half 'of, the year was brought up in Bluewater
council but no motion was made on the issue.
A decision by Huron East to defer farmland taxes
until fall for a second year brought the issue to the
attention of the municipality of Bluewater.
Treasurer/Tax Collector Terri Brandon said the
municipality would be looking at $182,863 in farmland
tax revenue being deferred until fall with the plan.
Coun., Irvin said he wasn't aware of a groundswell of
interest in it and hasn't heard a lot from the farming
community about the issue. He added he felt Bluewater
was best to pass on it.
Brandon mentioned they get requests for deferral
from seniors and low income residents who are also
having trouble with paying their taxes.
Deputy Mayor Paul Klopp said he commended Huron
East for allowing the option and said it is something he
could support. •
"Farmers are hurtin' out there," said HIopp.;
Mayor Bill Dowson wanted to get a consensus to see if
the issue should be looked into further.
"Do I see any support at all for us taking this step,"
asked Dowson.
The only councillor to speak up was Marg Deichert,
but only to point out there is a new seven-month plan in
place and deferring taxes until the end of the year
would just leave a bigger chunk of money due then.
Sunday service cancelled
due to bad weather
Welcome to winter! After a
January
where win-
ter travel
for the most
part, didn't present a problem,
February seems to be starting
off as quite a different path.
There was no Sunday ser-
vice at Cavan United Church
on account of the weather.
However next Sunday is the
annual meeting with church at
11 a.m. and lunch followed by
the meeting.
Also, since the third chance
to vote for two
elders was to have
been last Sunday,
anyone who has not
yet done so may do
it at the service on
Feb. 12.
