It was also an important tribute to one of curling's greats. Sandra Schmirler was a gold medal winner at the 1998 Olympics, the first time the sport was played in the games. "She's the reason why I curl," Jamula said. "I first fell in love with curling when I saw her play the Olympic Trials on TV in 1997. I fol- lowed her through the 98 games in Nagano and then decided to try curling for myself." Schmirler died of cancer at the age of 36 in 2000. For the 21 -year- old Jamula, the tournament is a way to honour the inspirational Saskatchewan skip. "It's the legacy Sandra Schmirler left behind," Jamula said. "She was always stressing, aside from curl- ing, family was important."
