Youths raise more than $1,400 at curling bonspiel
Mark Nonke8
Young people picked up brooms
and threw 40 -pound rocks for a good
cause last Saturday.
The curling rink in Vanastra was
flooded with dozens of youth aged
eight to 20 who raised more than
$1,400 in a junior day -long bonspiel
for the Sandra Schmirler
Foundation on Feb. 4.
Organizer Erin Jamula of
Goderich said the day -long tourna-

"We're all hard working," he says,"
adding that their team success has
come .from team, not individual
efforts.
Currie is excited to arrive in
Quebec and start playing.
He admits the competition -is going;
to be stiff, but he's not about to be
intimidated.
"If we play our game, we'll be fine,"
he says.
The Lakers will compete against
56 teams in their class, and are
guaranteed only two games in the
tournament, which runs from Feb.
9-19.
Partridge says the Lakers will be
competing against teams they've'
never even seen before, and there-
fore is not willing .to make any pre-
dictions on how well they'll do.
He considers this tournament to be
host to the elite peewee hockey
teams from around the world, and
is not occupied with whether the
Lakers win or lose.
"Our goal is to go out . there and
play our best."
Currie describes the tournament
in one word, "Big."
."There's going to be a lot of pres-
sure," he says, "but we can handle
it."

It was also an important tribute
to one of curling's greats. Sandra
Schmirler was a gold medal winner
at the 1998 Olympics, the first time
the sport was played in the games.
"She's the reason why I curl,"
Jamula said. "I first fell in love with
curling when I saw her play the
Olympic Trials on TV in 1997. I fol-
lowed her through the 98 games in
Nagano and then decided to try
curling for myself."
Schmirler died of cancer at the
age of 36 in 2000. For the 21 -year-
old Jamula, the tournament is a
way to honour the inspirational
Saskatchewan skip.
"It's the legacy Sandra Schmirler
left behind," Jamula said. "She was
always stressing, aside from curl-
ing, family was important."
