St. Columban School is offering
the opportunity to introduce kids to
books and critical thinking through
their book club.
The librarian at St. Columban
School has set out to teach students
that reading is fun and introduce
them to a wide variety of reading
material.
"The teachers cover the newer
books in the classroom but the clas-
sics get missed," Katie Dobson said.
"I want the students to realize that
there is more out there than just
Harry Potter."
Dobson said there was a large
interest in the first book club. Over
40 students signed up to read a book
and later come and share their
thoughts.
"It is nice for the kids to read and
not have to write anything, they can
just read for pleasure," she said.
"I think it makes them feel grown
up getting to come and talk" about a
book and share some food," she said,
adding the book club encourages the
students to read the book and
through questions make connections
to their life.
During a book club meeting, the
first round was held in December,
students and Dobson sat around and
talked about the book.
Talking about the book generates
discussion between the students,
they share stories and have fun.
Questions range from which char-
acter the student would like to be in
the book, to how they would rewrite
the ending, and the really important
events in it.
"It helps them to critically think
about the book. It's a different way
to gain experience," she said.
"A lot of time when you read you
don't ask yourself questions, or
think about different things.
"Reading is typically thought of as
a nerdy thing to do. I want to show
students that reading is fun and
that a lot of people do it," she said.
Dobson said, each student gets a
book for a month to read. "They sign
up for a day when they want to talk
about it. It is the same thing as
Oprah's Book Club, but for kids."
"They have really surprised me
with some of their comments. I have
read some of these books four or five
times and they have really made me
think," • she said. "I have learned a
lot from them."
