Aidan Harrison joined the CHSS teaching staff last January in an exchange that saw local teacher Carolyn Williams head to New Zealand for a year. The exchange came to an end for both teachers on Jan. 20. A general science and biology teacher, Harrison said he has enjoyed getting to know his Canadian students. "Students here can be just as friendly and challenging as the ones News The Huron Expositor • February 1, 2006 Page 25 e teacher returns to New Zealand back home, but one difference I saw is that at my New Zealand school about 65 per cent of the students come from single -parent families," he explained. appreciated having more parent support here. A higher percentage of the students were more socially mature because they have their par- ents as role models." Looking back on his year at Central Huron, Harrison found himself adjusting to a semestered school year and Canadian winters. "The biggest difference was the white stuff outside. We had our share of car incidents along Highway 8." he laughed. "Our New Zealand winters are like your fall." Living in Goderich during the exchange, Harrison and his wife Brydie played in the town's adult volleyball league and attended Bethel Pentecostal Assembly. Playing the drums during Coffee House performances with student bands was also a highlight of his Canadian experience. And while he speaks English, Harrison said language was also a challenge at times. "Even though I speak English, people don't always understand me because we don't roll our Rs like Canadians," he explained. "I remember one time I walked • down the hall, talked to three differ- ent teachers and had to repeat myself three times." As the exchange comes to a close, Harrison said he and his wife have mixed feelings about returning home. "We want to go back and see our family and friends, but we don't want to leave here," he said; "We've been really blessed and amazed by people's hospitality. This whole year we haven't been in want or need for anything - from pots and pans to fishing gear. "Everyone asks us what we'll miss most about Canada, and our answer is always the people." ,* Agricultural * Residential * Commercial * Pole Line Construction Retiedet 101400 ELECTRIC R.R, #4 Seaforth, Ont.
