Latest BSE case won't harm Canadian beef
industry, says Cattlemen's president Stan Eby
Dwight Irwin
The latest case of BSE won't
have any ill effects on the Canadian
beef industry, says the Canadian
Cattleman's Association president.
Stan Eby, a Kincardine farmer,
said he doesn't see the potential of a
market downturn, after it was
announced on Jan. 23 that another
cow was found to have BSE, or Mad
Cow Disease, in Alberta..
"The markets have been fairly
buoyant for all (types of cattle),
except for cull cows and bulls," Eby
said.
The US. market will stay open to
Canadian beef under the age of 30
months, although cull cows and
bulls still can't move freely across
the border.
Eby said the Alberta rancher
noticed a six-year-old cow showing
signs of sickness and the veterinari-
an euthanized the animal on the
farm. It was then sent away for test-
ing.
"For many years we've checked for
rabies_ when the cows act strange.
They' checked this one and it came
back positive for BSE," Eby said.
The carcass was incinerated,
meaning no part of the animal was
put into the human or animal food
chain.
Eby said it is encouraging when
producers act diligently when faced
with a sick animal. .
"We want to eliminate BSE from
this country and we need every-
body's cooperation. We appreciate
the producer's
involvement in
doing the right
thing."
What was odd
about this case
was the age of
the beast. It was
born in 2000, but
the country's
_feed ban came
into effect in
1997.
Eby said it
only takes one -
one thousandth
of a gram of
tainted feed to
infect an animal,
so a spec ' of it
may have been
left behind in a
feed bin and
eventually was
consumed by the
Public education
still needed about
continuing care beds
in Seaforth

While Clinton Public Hospital's two continuing care
beds were closed and moved to Seaforth last April,
Clinton patients are still learning of the change,
Seaforth's Local Advisory Committee (LAC) was told at
its Jan. 30 meeting.
"We need to keep educating the public. People don't
always pay attention until it affects them directly," said
site administrator Mary Cardinal.
The process of continuing care admissions of Clinton
patients to Seaforth Community Hospital was recently
reviewed by both hospitals.
"We need to keep it front and centre so patients and
their families know," she said.
As well, she said nurses and physicians at both sites
need to communicate about the transfers and continu-
um of care.
- Clinton's continuing care beds were moved to Seaforth
under the Huron -Perth Healthcare Alliance's balanced
budget plan when CPH's beds were reduced from 19 to
17 acute care beds (two of which are obstetrical beds).
The bed reductions left Seaforth with 18 beds (from
an original 34) including eight acute care and 10 contin-
uing care beds.

Eby said 87,000 cows have been
tested in Canada and only four have
been found to contain BSE. It pales
in comparison to Britain, where
187,000 were found with the disease
at one point.
"It shows our surveillance ;pro-
grams are working and the BSE
problems are extremely low in
Canada."
He said scientists have warned
the CCA in the past that a few more
cases of BSE are expected to be
found.
