MVCA asking council for help balancing budget
Jeff Heuchert
The Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority • is asking for an addition-
al $214,000 from Huron East in
2006.
The request was presented to
Huron East council during its regu-
lar meeting Jan. 24.
General manager for t e
Conservation Authority. Phil Bea
told council that over the past 10
years the Conservation Authority
did everything to keep the levy as
low as possible. -
But, that more money is now
needed to help balance its operating
budget and make infrastructure
repairs.
"Our board should have addressed
this years ago, and this has put us
in this position in 2006," he said.
Beard added that they've run into
problems partly because the provin-
cial government has not met their
granting criteria.
He said while attempts to con-
vince the province to reinvest in
conservation authorities has been
unsuccessful, additional funding
from the municipality could help
their cause.
"We want municipal support to
help pressure provincial funding
and balance our funding," said
Beard.
The additional funding will also be
put towards maintaining experi-
enced staff and conservation ser-
vices.
The proposed
increase would
raise Huron
East's levy from
$10.87 per

Grey Coun. Mark Beaven said he
worries that if council does not pay
the increase they could regret it
down the road.
For example, if there were a flood,
and the Conservation Authority
could not afford the trained person-
nel or services to deal with it.
"What is the cost if we don't meet
the levy cost?" Beaven asked.
McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure
asked Beard if the Conservation
Authority would be asking for more
money next year?
Beard assured council that the
money would be used for their five -

year plan, and that they would not
ask for a levy increase at least until
the five years were finished.
Brussels Coun. David Blaney
acknowledged that Huron East has
paid a small levy to the
Conservation Authority over the
years.
"We're being asked to pay what
other municipalities were asked a
long time ago. It's our turn," he said.
Council deferred the issue until
budget talks.
Skating
raises $2
at skate-a-thon.
The Seaforth Skating Club raised over
$2,000 at a skate-a-thon held recently at the
Seaforth arena.
The event was organized by Stacey
Dayman, a member of the club for 15 years.
"I wanted to do this to help to keep the
club going. They do fundraising every year
and the funds will probably go to ice time
and coaching," said Dayman.
She added the event will go towards her
volunteer hours required by a college course
she's taking.
With the help of coach Shannon Kroeplin,
close to 25 skaters were kept busy with
relay races and games during the event.
Every skater won a prize, depending on
the amount of money they raised.
Top money raisers were Alex and Jessica
Zaple, who raised $367.
