Those dreams were made possible. by Central Huron Secondary School graduate Jessica Bokhout, who spearheaded a holiday campaign to raise $6;300 to send orphans from the Kondwa Day Centre in Lusaka, Zambia to school. "Since January has arrived, and with it the winter blahs and Christmas credit-card bills, I thought I'd put a smile in your mailbox with the Kondwa update," Bokhout said in a recent email. "Brace yourselves friends, the news is wonderful." Currently working with CARE Zambia as part of her fourth-year University of Toronto co-op place- ment in the International Development Studies program, Bokhout sent DVDs to friends in the Clinton area asking for support last fall. Since then, the project has taken on a life of its own, raising over $20,000 — more than three times Bokhout's original goal. While Bokhout's original intens tions were to send 90 of the Kondwa orphans to Grade 1, not all children were old enough this year. Therefore, the remaining dona- tions were used to send former graduates of the centre to Grades 2- 5. Approximately 100 students have been sponsored in total. "The money we have raised has gone towards school fees for these beautiful little (children) and will contribute to the salaries for the Kondwa teachers, buy food for the centre's feeding program and sup- port the grannies and grandpas and aunts and unclep who care for the children," Bokhout added. "Your money is making a differ- ence." Bokhout's mother Helena McShane said donations are still coming in for the Zambian orphans, which she hopes will become wyear- round project. "It's just unbelievable that this many people have vol- unteered to hand over their hard-earned money for a place they have never been to and children they have never seen," she said. "It just amazes us. It's truly heartwarm- ing." Contributions for Bokhout's campaign came from near and far, including more than $10,000 from CHSS-led initiatives. Huron Centennial school and a number of area churches have also chipped in for the cause. McShane said Bokhout is now work- ing closely with the Flying Angels School to identify more children and families in need of sponsorship. Flying Angels has 751 stu- dents in Grades 1-7. More than 200 of those children are orphans. Donations are also being used to purchase a pair of shoes for each sponsored child and each child at the Kondwa centre. "We are just so. grateful for the support of the people. This all would not have been possible without them," McShane added.
