Catholic board excited by apprenticeship program

According to superintendent Dan
Parr, it's difficult for boards like the
Huron -Perth Catholic District
School Board to establish beneficial
arrangements with post -secondary
education institutions, because
there are none with a significant
presence in the area.
That's one reason he's excited
about a new program connected to
the board's version of the Ontario
Youth Apprenticeship Program
(OYAP).
"We hope it grows," said. Parr, fol-
lowing a presentation by Huron -
Perth OYAP project leader Tim
Martens at a regular board meeting
Monday, Jan. 23.
Martens recently . negotiated
what's called an "articulation agree-
ment" with London-based
Fanshawe College, enabling stu-
dents in five specialized Huron -
Perth OYAP programs to gain pref-
erential access to Fanshawe cours-
es, and possibly get a one-year
jump-start on what might normally
be two-year apprenticeships.
It will also move the school board
to the top of the list if and when the
community college receives dona-
tions of new equipment and needs
to dispose of existing equipment.
Martens admitted he went into
negotiations hoping to _ secure guar-
anteed access to courses instead of
preferential access.
"I was maybe asking for more
than what was attainable in a short
time," he told trustees.
"At this point, I think this is a
very positive step forward," he said.
The five specialized programs are
Agricultural Equipment, Plumbing,
Electrician, HVAC (heating, ventila-
tion and air conditioning), and Gas_
and Pipe. Fitter.

Recladding project underway
at Seaforth Community Hospital
Susan Hundertmark
The recladding of Seaforth Community
Hospital `. is `well underway," members of the
Seaforth Local Advisory Committee were told
at their Jan. 30 meeting.
A $350,000 facelift, which will cover the
hospital's brickwork with an exterior insula-
tion system
that will have a
stucco -like
appearance, is
going according
to plan, said
Chuck Meyer,
manager of
building ser-
vices for the
Huron Perth
Healthcare
Alliance.
Meyer said
there were
some problems
with odour
when epoxy was
used to refasten
anchors to the
building.
"The building
sucked all the
fumes in," he
said.
Site adminis-
trator Mary
Cardinal added
that the mild
weather this
January
allowed staff to
provide the
maximum ven-
tilation to solve
the odour prob-
lem.
"We were
quite fortunate
with the balmy
weather," she
said.
Meyer showed an artist's rendering of the
final appearance of the building to the LAC
members.
"I think it will look quite nice when it's
done," he said.
The project is expected
May.

will spend their semester doing in -
school work, and the second .semes-
ter in a co-op work placement.
At the conclusion of the course,
they may take an exam which, if
they pass, could qualify them to
progress straight into the second
year of a two-year apprenticeship.
According to Parr, Fanshawe ben-
efits from the agreement's useful-
ness as a recruitment tool.
He says enrolment has tradition-
ally been low in some skilled trades
programs at all community colleges,
despite ongoing provincial govern-
ment efforts to build awareness.
