`Awesome' Heelys nexn'
plugs in Seaforth schools
From Page 1
vice-principal of Huron Centennial public
school in Brucefield.
While she agreed the shoes look fun to
wear, Shore said safety comes first.
"It's -not that we're against them. We're not
saying that they can't wear them. All we
want is for them to wear the plugs," Smith
added.
As well, both Seaforth Public School and St.
James School have decided to disallow kids
from wearing Heelys.
"The reason is safety, absolutely," said Judy
Renner, secretary at St. James School.
"[Banning them] hasn't been a problem. No
parents have called. The kids haven't com-
plained. I think they understand the rule -
walk in the halls," she said.
Renner said winter weather adds to the
concern.
"The floor gets wet during this time of
year," she added. "We're eliminating the pos-
sibility of an accident."
Both elementary schools made an official
announcement after Christmas holidays, as
there was an increase of kids wearing them.
"Number one, we think they are danger-
ous," said Kim Black, principal of Seaforth
Public.
Like Shore, Black can see why. Heelys are
amusing but still stands behind the decision
to ban them.
"They look fun, we'll admit to that, but they
aren't fit for an educational institution."
Central Huron secondary school (CHSS)
has not had a significant problem with kids
wearing them.
"It is a safety issue," said principal Herb
Klassen, although "it has not been an issue
here. We have three stories (in the CHSS
building). (Heelys) are very dangerous on
steps, but "it just hasn't been an issue here."
Chelsea Catling of CHSS doesn't see the
problem with the shoes, however.
"[Schools] shouldn't ban them. Just because
some kids can't get the way of riding them
doesn't mean the rest of the people shouldn't
get to ride them either."
Heelys are a trend just like any other, hove-
ever, and Catling thinks that the new phe-
nomenon will eventually become old news.
"They are really just a fashion trend," she
said. "They will probably get really crazy in
the next year and then eventually die down."
Stratford and London are the closest places
to buy Heelys, and they're being sold very
quickly.
"We used to sell them, and then we stopped.
We've had people asking about them, and I'm
not joking, three times a day," commented a
Sport Chek employee in Stratford.
Lack of smoke detectors at town hall
questioned at on East meeting
any building.

A recent incident at Seaforth's town hall has
one councillor asking why the building does
not have any smoke detectors.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath said
during council's regular meeting Jan. 24 that
it's common sense to have smoke detectors in
He specifically referred to the museum in
town hall's upper floor.
"It seems a little foolish doesn't it? We have
an antique thing up here, and if it (the build-
ing) goes, it'll (the museum's collection) be
gone," said McGrath.
The Seaforth Fire Department was called to
town hall when smoke was seen
coming from the garage at the back
of the building, but no alarm was
sounded.
The smoke was coming from a
burned out motor on a heater.
Huron East Administrator
Jack McLachlan said he would look
into the price to install smoke detec-
tors.
