Verberne nets two goals along with MVP
honours at Junior D All-Star game
Jeff Heuchert
In his first appearance at the
Junior D Hockey All-Star game Jan.
21, Seaforth's David Verberne left
quite an impression, netting two
goals and earning MVP honours for
his conference.
Verberne, 19, and forward for the
Mitchell Hawks, is enjoying a sea-
son where his points total has
"already passed my other years."
Verberne is playing in his third
season with the Hawks.
Through 34 games this season,
Verberne has tallied 16 goals and 15
assists, good for fourth on the team.
He says it was an honour to be
chosen by his coaches to play in the
All-Star game.
"It was laid back and
not too intense, but it
was fun to be there,
and fun to play."
Verberne, a student
in Conestoga College's
Pre -Service
Firefighting program,
is quick to thank his
teammates for his suc-
cess.
"I have good line -
mates. They help out
and get me the puck,"
he says, adding that
they all play hard
every game.
Heading into the All-Star game,
David Verberne
which was played in
Lucan, Verberne
says he "just wanted
to go in and have
fun," which he most
certainly did.
His first goal
was the result of
what he says calls
a "nice passing play."
He says when
the puck landed on
his stick the goalie
was totally out of
position and "I pretty
much just had to put
it in the net."
Verberne can take all the credit on
his second goal though.
While heading towards the goalie
he was tripped -up, and as a result,
awarded a penalty shot.
When it came to the penalty shot,
Verberne says he faked the shot and
deked to his forehand.
In all, Verberne says the All Star
Game was a .good experience, but
one that had to end quickly.
The Hawks .were back on the ice
Sunday, with a 12-3 win over
Belmont, in which Verberne record-
ed a hat trick.
The Hawks . have six games
remaining in the season and sit
atop their conference.
Verberne says their goal is to win
at least five of their remaining six
games.
