Musician shares his passion for lolkabilly' sound on third CD
Brian Melady performs alongside Toronto musicians including international recording artist
Susan Hundertmark
Brian Melady has
been playing folk
music since the 1960s,
but since an accident
in 1972 left him dis-
abled, music has been
his passion.
"My disability affords
me the time and totali-
ty to enjoy life. I'm
healthy enough to be
happy so I work at
enjoying life. That's my
job," he says.
Launching his third
CD over the weekend
at the St. Columban
Knights of Columbus
Hall with friends and
family dancing and..
enjoying the "folkabil
ly" sound, Melady is
doing his job.
Brian Melady and A
Folkabilly Troupe fol-
lows Pilgrim Pass,
which was released in
2002 and Millennium
Mix, released in 2000.
His last two CDs
were produced by Paul
Benedict, of Toronto,
who introduced him to
a. group of Toronto
musicians, including
international recording
artist Daisy DeBolt,
who play on his latest
CD.
"These guys nurture
me as a musician and I
add some country
freshness. We're a
brotherhood of starv-
ing artists," says
Melady.
Also on the CD is
Melady's friend since
high school, Tom
Burke, of the Seaforth
area.
"I taught him his
first guitar chord and
now he has magic fin-
gers with the guitar,"
says Melady.
Though Melady still
lives "over the hill"
near St. Columban on
Highway 8, he has
been travelling fre-
quently to Toronto
where he's been record-
ing over the past three
years.

Melady performs during his CD launch Jan. 14
at the Knights of Columbus Hall in St. Columban.
"I move in with Paul
when I'm in Toronto.
All the musicians live
in the
same part
of town.
They're
the best
folk musi-
cians in
Toronto,"
he says.
Melady
has writ-
ten three
of the
songs on
his latest
CD.
Indian
Jim is a
song about
his older
brother
Jim who
died last
June and
Melady
performed
it wearing
native
garb.
"I grew
up hunt-
ing and fishing with
my brother. I was
always his sidekick,"
he says.
Jim was an avid out-
doorsman and teacher
who set up educational
programs on native
reserves in
Saskatchewan and
Alberta, as well as an
outdoor resource cen-
tre in Ayton, Ont.
"Jim passed at 2 a.m.
and I got home at noon
and wrote the song. I
went for a liedown and
a wild storm came and
blew the song away.
Two days later, I
wrote it again,"
says Melady.
Another song,
CNR Downsize,
was inspired by
the federal gov-
ernment's down-
sizing of the rail-
way in the 1990s
when a third of
the maintenance
staff was let go.
"I wrote it in
1999 and pre-
dicted the
Whitby derail-
ment of 2002,"
he says, adding
the lyrics say,

"Some trains will run
on broken tracks. Some
CNR brothers aren't
coming back."
The third song he,
wrote is called A Dutch
Canadian Folksong
and is based on
Dublin -area farmer
= Harry DeLoyer, who
immigrated to the area
in the 1960s.
Other selections are
written by Jim Croce,
Alan Jackson, Johnny
Cash and Toby Keith.
"It took me three
years to write the CNR
song. I have to rely on
the professionals to
provide me with songs.
But, there's more to
come, given time," he
says.
