Steckle only Liberal to keep seat in SW Ontario
From Page 1
Lobb took an early lead in the race
for the riding. At the Liberal head-
quarters in the basement of Sacred
Heart Church in Wingham, Steckle
supporters looked glum and tense
as the initial numbers poured in.
However, after an hour, Steckle
took a marginal lead and for the
next few hours flip-flopped with
Lobb.
At the campaign celebration, a
mixture of pensive sighs and bursts
of applause and cheers were sound-
ed throughout the night. In fact, the
race was so tight that at one point
only a single vote separated the
candidates.
Just after midnight, Steckle's
numbers leapt up and his re-elec-
tion was officially declared.
"I clipped my y nails before I came
tonight so I didn't have to chew
them," Steckle said.
In the 2004 federal election
Steckle was sent to Ottawa with
more than 9,000 votes over the
Conservative candidate.
"This has been a very tough elec-
tion," Steckle remarked during
media interviews.
Steckle admitted that it's been
difficult with his reputation being
questioned and his party's integrity
being called all sorts of names.
Steckle said Prime Minister Paul
Martin did the honourable thing
when he announced he'd 'step down
as the Liberal leader on election
night.
In southwestern Ontario, Steckle
was the only Liberal candidate to
keep his seat. In the neighbouring
ridings of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex,
Bruce -Grey -
Owen Sound and
Perth -Wellington
Conservative
representatives
were chosen.

Steckle said he'll continue to speak
out on behalf of the riding.
"I've never swerved from my goal
of serving you," he said.
In the next session of parliament
Steckle promised to voice his con-
cerns on farming, health care and
senior issues. -----
Steckle added that government
needs to immediately address the
agriculture income issues or this
spring some planters won't be going
into the fields. Steckle suggested
further risk management programs
need to be explored and the
Canadian Agriculture Income
Stabilization (CAIS) program must
be re -worked so it better serves
farmers.
Steckle, who lives on a farm near
Zurich, sat as the parliamentary
chairman of agriculture committee
during the previous Liberal govern-
ment.
Steckle also congratulated his rid-
ing rivals on their effort and partic-
ularly thanked his staff and family
for their support.
"I'm not a person who believes I
can do all these things by myself,"
he said, singling out his wife of 40 -
years forher understanding and,
endless support.
