At the Liberal head- quarters in the basement of Sacred Heart Church in Wingham, Steckle supporters looked glum and tense as the initial numbers poured in. However, after an hour, Steckle took a marginal lead and for the next few hours flip-flopped with Lobb. At the campaign celebration, a mixture of pensive sighs and bursts of applause and cheers were sound- ed throughout the night. In fact, the race was so tight that at one point only a single vote separated the candidates. Just after midnight, Steckle's numbers leapt up and his re-elec- tion was officially declared. "I clipped my y nails before I came tonight so I didn't have to chew them," Steckle said. In the 2004 federal election Steckle was sent to Ottawa with more than 9,000 votes over the Conservative candidate. "This has been a very tough elec- tion," Steckle remarked during media interviews. Steckle admitted that it's been difficult with his reputation being questioned and his party's integrity being called all sorts of names. Steckle said Prime Minister Paul Martin did the honourable thing when he announced he'd 'step down as the Liberal leader on election night. In southwestern Ontario, Steckle was the only Liberal candidate to keep his seat. In the neighbouring ridings of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, Bruce -Grey - Owen Sound and Perth -Wellington Conservative representatives were chosen. In the next session of parliament Steckle promised to voice his con- cerns on farming, health care and senior issues. ----- Steckle added that government needs to immediately address the agriculture income issues or this spring some planters won't be going into the fields. Steckle suggested further risk management programs need to be explored and the Canadian Agriculture Income Stabilization (CAIS) program must be re -worked so it better serves farmers. Steckle, who lives on a farm near Zurich, sat as the parliamentary chairman of agriculture committee during the previous Liberal govern- ment. Steckle also congratulated his rid- ing rivals on their effort and partic- ularly thanked his staff and family for their support.
