HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2006-01-18, Page 5Opinion The Huron Expositor • Janurary 18, 2006 Page 5 Tuckersmith farm with river running through it is sold for $5,000 in 1906 JANUARY =14, 1881 A shooting match took place in Hensall on Tuesday the llth between John Evans, engineer on the Great Western .Railway and Thomas Bissett of Exeter fora purse of $50 a side, and as both the above mentioned gentlemen are crack shots, a very close match as expected, but it was soon seen that Mr. Bissett was taking the lead and he won easily by quite a number of birds. The roof at one of the blocks at the merchants' salt works fell in under the heavy weight of snow upon it ` last week. Fortunately no person was injured by the accident. On Thursday night of the last week, the roof of a pig house on the farm of James Kerr, " northern grav- el road in McKillop, broke in with the weight of the snow and killed a fine fat porker. JANUARY 12, 1906 Horace Townsend has sold his farm on the second concession of Tuckersmith, west end, to his neighbour Levi Strong, for the sum of $5,000. The farm contains 100 acres and although it is somewhat broken with the river running through it, it is a good value for the money. Messrs. John and James Staples have purchased the barbering and cigar business of S. Jordan, next to the post office and took possession on Monday. They are both smart young men and good barbers and should be able to make things go. The Palace Rink in Seaforth will be opened for skating this Friday evening when the band will play. L. Mickle moved that they cut off the salary for the present year for the councillors and Reeve. This move was seconded by William Consitt. The council will receive no salary for the year 1931. Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the five storey and a half frame house of Hugh McMurtrie, of town line, a mile and a, quarter west of Kippen on Thursday after- noon last week. JANUARY 13, 1956 The way was paved for additional Egmondville residents to obtain water from the Seaforth system when the Public Utility Commission, at a meeting Thursday agreed arrangements for the provision that water could be made. Seaforth's telephone fire alarm system is now equipped with an alarm system of its own. JANUARY 15, 1981 At its monthly meeting Monday night Seaforth council rejected a proposal to join, with Goderich, Wingham, Exeter and Clinton to form a joint police governing body. Seaforth council voted Monday night to give its members and pub- lic utilities commiwsioners pay increases. There was a break and enter at Seaforth District High School last Thursday night, resulting in the theft of $200 from the cafeteria till. Most children aren't, shy about showing affection.
