Vanastra contemplates new rec facility
From Page 1
Seaforth.
"I've always called Vanastra
a town from the first day. You
people deserve the same as
the other areas of Huron
East," answered Mayor Joe
Seili, reiterating that
Vanastra would keep the cen-
tre
en tre since both Seaforth and'
Brussels have their own
recreation centres.
Seili said that since council
has decided this year to cre-
ate an inventory of its build-
ings, evaluating how much
work each structure needs, it
decided to suggest thinking
proactively for the Vanastra
rec centre.
Residents also stressed how
much they love the pool and
would want to see one includ-
ed in any new facility.
A question from MacLellan
about whether residents
would want to a new facility
without a pool was met with
deafening silence.
A woman who moved to .
Vanastra recently from
London said her 11 -year-old
son is blossoming in the com-
•
munity, thanks largely to the
rec centre and its staff.
"I don't want to see our chil-
dren do without. I don't want
to see this facility close before
another one opens up," she
said.
Trainer Ken DeVries said
benefits of a new facility are
many, especially since over-
crowding in the current
weight room and a lack of
equipment turns potential
members away.
"The first year we started
with new equipment, we were
making money. But, now it's
going downhill because it's
too crowded. I mean, we have
one treadmill. I want a bigger
gym," he said.
He added that the current
set-up forces members to
walk on watery floors to get
to the gym and to the weight
room.
Glen MacLachlan said a 10 -
year wait for a new facility
was too long.
"If we don't make the
change now, we'll lose the
advantage everyone is here
for now. The sooner we get
this done the better," he said.
When one resident asked
how the money would be
raised and whether there are
grants available to help fund
a new facility, Seili responded
that Vanastra has "a super
Lions Club."
Both Seili and MacLellan
told residents that they can-
not hold future councils to
plans they make today about
a new recreation facility.
"But, you can elect repre-
sentatives that will carry it
on," said Seili.
MacLellan said he was
thrilled to see the turn -out at
the meeting, even though the
reason for the meeting was
not specified in the advertise-
ment.
"Part of the reason the ad
was vague was we wanted to
know if anyone cared. But,
we got the turn -out. We can
see there's a need and a
desire," he said.
Questions about whether or
not the .Tuckersmith Day
Nursery would be a part of
the new facility were not
answered directly.
"There needs to be a day-
care in the community but is
