Seaforth
closer
to building
new wells

A recently -begun
environmental assessment on
two potential locations for new
wells north of Seaforth could end
a more than three-year process to
find a suitable source of drinking
water for Seaforth residents.
"I'd love to get it done and get
.the wells up and running," says
Huron East Administrator Jack
McLachlan.
Seaforth's Chalk Street well
was closed in October of 2002
when unacceptably high levels of
radioactive elements including
radon, radium and uranium were
found in the water.
A month later, the Ministry of
the Environment told Huron
East that Seaforth's only
operating well - the Welsh Street
well -- needs corrective action
because it is "under the direct
influence of surface water" or a
GUDI well.
Since then, council has been
looking for another source of
drinking water that provides
both the quantity and quality
needed by the town and is
affordable to ratepayers.
During 2003 and 2004, council
explored whether or not to join a
pipeline to Lake Huron that was
being built to Exeter and Hensall
but decided last year to continue
its search for suitable
groundwater since the pipeline
project was estimated to cost $20
million.
Test wells near the existing
Welsh Street well and on the
farm of Christa Eckert, north of
Seaforth were discovered to have
