Season
With the holiday season upon us,
there will be many situations and
triggers that can cause both current
smokers and those who have quit
smoking to light up a cigarette.
An Ipsos Reid Survey of Canadian
Adult Smokers (November 2005)
found that the most common situa-
tions for "lighting up" are after a
meal (41 per cent), with a drink (40
per cent), while experiencing stress
or tension (26 per cent), and spend-
ing time with friends (20 per cent).
The holiday season can be filled
with many visits with friends and
family, festive dinner parties, and
for many, increased stresses and
tension.

Past smokers face difficult challenge
during holiday season
out Cravings this Holiday it can be difficult to stay smoke-free
during the holiday season.
To curb cravings during the holi-
days, be aware of the situations that
trigger your nicotine cravings and
have a plan.
For example, if you experience a
craving, remove yourself from the
situation by going for a walk, drink-
ing a glass of water, or chewing on a
toothpick.
After a few minutes, the craving
will lose its power. Plan some spe-
cial activities over the holiday sea-
son; like tobogganing, snowmobil-
ing, skiing, or skating; a change in
routine may help you to stay smoke-
free.
Hold activities and gatherings at
event locations that are smoke-free;
a smoke-free environment will help

you to stay quit.
If you think that this holiday sea-
son is going to be particularly diffi-
cult, have some nicotine gum or a
nicotine inhaler ready to use when
a strong craving hits.
It is hard to quit smoking and to
stay quit; these aids will help you to
resist smoking during the holiday
season, when the urge to smoke is
so high.
It is safer to use either the gum or
the inhaler than to continue smok-
ing.
