St. Anne's students registering for federal election
Jennifer Hubbard
Vacation may not be the only 'v'
word on students' minds this holi-
day season.
Grade 12 students at St. Anne's
Catholic Secondary School attended
an Elections Canada assembly
Monday morning to learn how to
vote in the upcoming federal elec-
tion.
With Huron -Bruce electorate revi-
sion supervisor John Gates as their
guide, the senior students got a
step-by-step tour of the voter regis-
tration process.
As part of the riding's returning
office team, Gates — a former high
school teacher in Kincardine —
works with five others to ensure the
76,000 names on Huron -Bruce's vot-
ing list are accurate on election day.
"The last time we had a federal
election we fixed 17,000 names and
I have at least 30 people working for
me that are really looking forward
to receiving 40 to 60 new names
from you here at St. Anne's," he
said.
To be eligible to vote in the Jan.
23 election students must be on the
List of Electors, be 18 years of age
or older by Jan. 23 and a Canadian
citizen by Jan. 22.
Interested students received vot-
ing packages to mail -in to the
returning office by 6 p.m. on Jan.
17. Proof of name, address and sig-
nature is also required.
Gates advised sending a photo-
copy of a driver's licence or new
health card. Cancelled cheques are
also an option.
It is possible to add your name or
have information updated on polling
day or at the advance polls, but
Gates said there are'often long
waits to do so.
"It's pretty simple. It takes about
five minutes of your time to get on
the voters list," he said.
"The next step is to take an inter-
est and become involved in the
democratic process."
And not having time to vote is no
excuse, Gates added.
"What most people don't know is
that they can cast their vote daily
from the time the election is called,"
he said. "We've had over 50 people
stop in and vote already because
they're going to be away during the
election."
Voters can cast their ballotdaily
in person at the Huron -Bruce
returning office or satellite return-
ing office and by requesting an
application for a "special ballot"
through mail.
On election day, the designated
polling division stations will be open
from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30
p.m.
With more than 15
registration packages
distributed minutes
after the Dec. 19 pre-
sentation, Gates was
optimistic about the
number of St. Anne's
students that will be
heading to the polls in
January.
"Of the high schools
in the area, St. Anne's
was the only one that
opted for a presenta-
tion rather than just
having me drop off the
registration packages,"
he commented.
Grade 12 student
Amanda -Lynn Feeney
agreed, adding St.
Anne's is a very "politi-
cal" school. Even
though she is not eligi-
ble to vote this year
she and another stu-
dent created a 'how
should you vote quiz'
to make voting easier
for students.
"No one has the time
to open the red book,
blue book and orange
book and read about
all of the issues," she
explained. "The
process needs to be
simplified to get more
students to vote."
The multiple choice
quiz asks questions
about a student's
stance on issues like
health care, taxes, edu-
cation, etc.
Each answer corre-
lates with a political
party, showing stu-
dents which platform
their beliefs are closest
to.
