Recommendations improve
conditions at Seaforth museum
Ashley Eddie
The Seaforth and Area Museum
has been under inspection by
Dianne Smith, of Egmondville,
who gave recommendations for
storage improvements and
temperature control.
Smith, who has worked at
museums for 20 years, did some
work with the Seaforth Museum a
few months ago.
"It was an informal
recommendation for them to look
into for the future," said Smith.
"What I did basically was
improvements to their existing
storage. 1'he rest was standard
museum practice, what every
museum should have."
Recommendations include
controlling humidity at 30 to 50
per cent, keeping temperature no
higher than 24 degrees Celcius,
extending second floor air
conditioning to the storage room,
moving photographs to where
temperature can be controlled,
installing more shelves. wrapping
photos with plastic and being
more selective when accepting
donations.
"Generally, objects in poor
condition should not be accepted.
Objects in poor condition often
require more resources to keep
and preserve, and they cannot be
used to display," said Smith's
report.
Jack McLachlan, Huron East
Clerk -Administrator, said that the
recommendations are going to be
considered by council next year.
"We would just focus on the
improvements at this stage of the
game," he said.
Ralph Laviolette, Huron East
economic development officer is
hoping for a different
improvement for the new year.
He is hoping to arouse more
interest for utilizing the third floor
of Town Hall as part of the
Seaforth Museum.
The museum currently only
occupies the second floor which
was donated by the town.
Doors Open, a program
inviting people to view historic
places, involved nearly 40
landmarks in Seaforth during the
summer. During this event many
people were surprised to see that
there was a museum in town,
agreed Laviolette.
"Not a lot of people come down
Main Street to appreciate it," he
said.
Laviolette agreed, however, that
the people who did see the exhibit
enjoyed it very much.
'I think we have wonderful
exhibits in the museum. It
contains a lot of history. It's a
very unique collection," said
Laviolette.
