Students at Huron Centennial
school have 1,070 reasons to smile.
That's the word from the
Brucefield school's proud student
council after students, staff and
school supporters raised nearly
$1,100 in a mere two weeks' time to
aid the children of Zambia.
The original goal? $210.
The students were first inspired
to raise dollars for the worthy cause
of sending Zambian children to
school after watching an informa-
tional DVD by the area's own
Jessica Bokhout who is currently
working with the African children
as part of a cooperative education
program through the University of
Toronto where she is currently
studying.
After watching the moving piece,
'students decided to put their
toonies to a good cause through a
`Toonies for Teaching' fundraising
drive. The end result was more
toonies than the students ever
imagined.
"I think this is super," says stu-
dent council secretary Katie

Indeed, student council treasurer
Brandon Coleman notes the stu-
dents approached everyone from
parents to neighbours.
In addition to the fundraising
efforts, students plan to send letters
to Bokhout in the New Year.
"We'd also like to encourage other
schools to follow suit," says
Brandon, noting some area schools,
including Seaforth public, are
already on board with fundraisers.
It's nice to know we could make a
difference this far away," he adds.
Laureen Ayers, the teacher -advi-
sor for the council, says the staff is
especially proud of the students'
efforts.
All told, the generosity of the
Huron Centennial school communi-
ty means 15 children will be spon-
sored for school, which is up a dozen
student's from the original goal of
covering the costs of three children.
