The Kinsmen Club has taken the lead in the acquisition of a lot in Hensall that has been deeded to the local Habitat affiliate for the pur- pose of building a house. John Schenk, chair of Habitat's Site Selection Committee, along with Steve Knight and Darrin Durand of the Hensall Kinsmen, negotiated the deal that will eventu- ally lead to the construction of the third Habitat house in Huron County, The first house in Clinton is now completed and occupied. The second build is slated for Wingham, and now the third build can be officially targeted for Hensall. Schenk commented, I"I think that the way the lot was procured in Hensall represents the model that we will find most successful in the future for the acquisition of lots that we need at a cost we can afford." Paul Dyck, chair of Habitat for Humanity Huron County, echoed the comments and added, "I want to thank both John Schenk, Steve Knight, and the rest of the Kinsmen Club of Hensall and District for not only acting on their ideals of service to the community, but also for hav- ing the foresight to partner with us in order to make a real difference in the life of a deserving family." The date for construction has not yet been set, but Dyck comments, "Our next house will be in Wingham and if fund raising and donations of material is on track, we hope to build in the spring of 2006 in Wingham." "Hensall will be next. Again, we have fundraising targets to achieve before we can start building, but Hensall will be our next site after Wingham." The family selection process will determine who will be eligible to purchase the house. Habitat for Humanity Huron County sells homes to partner fami- lies at no profit and finances no - interest mortgages. The homes are built with partner families, using donations in the form of capital, property, labour and donations of new building supplies from individuals, companies, faith groups and service clubs. The goal is to build simple, decent homes thrpugh the co-operation of partner families, volunteers, and trades professionals. Families are chosen based on their need for housing and their abili- ty to pay for and main- tain the home. Further, a willing- ness to partner with and support the objec- tives of Habitat for Humanity Huron County is necessary. Dyck also noted that any donations should be sent to the organiza- tion's Hensall address. Any donations sent to Habitat for Humanity Canada in Waterloo must be specifically earmarked for Huron County. At the December board meeting of Habitat for Humanity Huron County, the board of directors acknowledged the gen- erous support of the Kinsmen Club of Hensall and District. It was noted that 18 months ago, it was the Hensall Kinsmen who made the first major donation to the local Habitat organization and provided financial support when the group was first getting orga- nized in Huron County. Habitat for Humanity Huron County is entirely oper- ated by volunteers. Habitat provides a "hand up, not a hand out" by selling homes to qualified families through "sweat equity" and non-interest mort- gages.
