"There are any number of funerals every year in the community and it's a niche that needed filling," says Northside United minister Rev. John Gould. "Christmas is a time of stress on many levels and bereavement and loss are one of the big stresses," he says. Gould says a service that acknowledges the difficul- ties of the season addresses the needs of a certain popu- lation in any town. "It's the admission that not everyone is jolly. People are coping with separation and divorce, the loss of a job or they're living with an illness. Even though we're all supposed to put a smile on our face and have a good time this time of year, it's difficult for some to go to par- ties," he says. While the service is specifically Christian, Gould says it helps to get people together who are all coping with - the same issue of loss. "Peer support can be the best form of healing," he says. Along with readings from the Bible and hymns, the service included a memorial candle lighting for anyone who wanted to acknowledge the loss in their lives. "We light this candle to remember ourselves. this Christmas time. We pause and remember the past weeks, months and for some us, years of down times. We remember the poignancy of memories, the grief, the sadness, the hurts, the pain of reflecting on our own mortality," said the service.
