Federal funding would put sinkhole
study recommendations into action
As the findings of the second phase of a project
researching sinkholes in Huron East and West Perth
being written, Huron and Perth counties
are applying for funding
that would help to
implement the project's
first phase recommen-
dations.
An application for
$70,000 in federal
Greencover funding.
was submitted Friday
to the Ontario Soil and
Crop Association after
both Huron and Perth
counties signed letters
of intent.
If approved, the
funding would allow
farmers in the catch-
ment area of four sink-
hole clusters in

The 10 study recommendations from the first phase
ranged from developing and implementing a groundwa-
ter study to actively managing sinkhole cap-
ture areas and ensuring spill contingency
plans are in place to educating the public
about sinkholes.
The second phase of the project, which
was done last summer, involved a tracer
study to discover where water that went
down a sinkhole ended up.
But, after sending sodium bromide down
a sinkhole at Chiselhurst in June, Scott
said none of the tracer showed up in local
wells.
The project involved monitoring eight
wells two kilometres around Chiselhurst,
first hourly for the first eight hours, then
every few days and then weekly, but scien-
tists are still unsure where the tracer
ended up.
"We're still taking samples monthly,"
says Scott.
He adds there's a number of possibilities
about what happened to the tracer - it might have
become too diluted to show up, it could have gone to
unsampled wells or it could have gone in "a completely
different direction."
"The fact it didn't show up gives a little bit of comfort.
We always feared that any contaminants that went
down the sinkhole went directly to where we draw our
water from but that's not the case," he says.
A third possible project could end up studying further
the fractures in underground rock to continue trying to
determine where groundwater travels.
"We're still trying to imagine what's happening
underground," says Scott.
"An extension to the project could help us more on the
science side using other methods to get a picture of
fractures in the rock," he says. "The Ontario Geological
Survey is still interested in this area."

'We want to try
our best to
make sure the
water going into
sinkholes is as
good as we can

Alec Scott, of the
Ausable Bayfield
Conservation
Authority
to submit requests for funding after
writing proposals of how they would
protect the groundwater in the area.
"It would support the best man-
agement practices of farmers
improving the quality of water
draining into the sinkholes," says
Huron County planner Suzanna
Reid.
Alec Scott, study project manager
of the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority, says the
funding will help to implement rec-
ommendations made in the first
phase of the project completed in the
spring of 2004.
"We'd like to take a proactive
approach. We want to try our best to
make sure the water going into sink-
holes is as good as we can get it," he
says.
Scott says the applications from
farmers will provide input from
landowners with ideas that could be
affordable.

Huron United Way
close to achieving goal
This year's Huron United
Way campaign is very close
to achieving its goal of
$230,000.
"Back in August we set a
very ambitious goal of
230,000, which made some
people a little nervous."
says Larry Langan, chair
of the Huron United Way.
"But we are very close to
making that goal and are
cautiously optimistic that
with your support we will
make it."
Politicians and local
industry representatives
gathered in Bayfield
recently to hear the cur-
rent United Way totals.
The United Way cam-
paign includes revenue
from special events, corpo-
rate gifts, individual dona-
tions and workplace cam-
paigns.
"We still have several
workplace campaigns
underway, and we are
working hard to get them
closed and reporting final
results to us," says
Langan.
"We have had terrific
momentum and donations
are still coming in from the
public, but we aren't home
free just yet!Please remem-
ber the Huron United Way
in your gift giving this holi-
day season and help us get
over the top!"
