Northside
United Church
to hold
Christmas day
turkey supper
Susan Hundertmark
Positive comments after last year's
traditional Christmas dinner Dec.
25 have prompted organizers to plan
the event for a second year at
Northside United.
"Some people approached us ask-
ing if we were having it again since
they were looking forward to it,"
says organizer Susan Campbell.
The free noon dinner of turkey
with all the trimmings began last
year for those who might be lonely
and unable to join family at
Christmas.
"Last year, there were parents
whose kids are too far away, those
who don't like driving in the weath-
er, widows and widowers. For some,
it's just not Christmas unless they're
with others," says Campbell.
The meal is also Christmas dinner
for Susan, her husband Mark and
their three children.
"We all eat together. No one is
serving or being served. It's my meal
too," she says.
Campbell says, like last year,
donations are being sought to supply
the food and anyone is welcome both
as a guest and a volunteer.
Since Christmas is on Sunday this
year, Northside United's Sunday ser-
vice will be held before the dinner.
Last year, more than 20 people
attended the meal and Campbell is
hoping those who want to join the
meal this year will register before
Dec. 19.
"We want to make sure we have
enough," she says.
Contributions of food and money
were plentiful last year, when
Campbell had to turn some volun-
teers away.
She says an afternoon of euchre,
bridge or jigsaw puzzles is being
planned to follow the meal.
"One man last year told me he
hadn't had a traditional Christmas
meal for 17 years. For some, this is it
for Christmas," she says.
"The best compliment was when
people told me it felt like they were
at home," says Campbell.
