Watermain break results in boil water advisory SusanIIu n d e r t m a r k 12011 Businesses and apartments in the downtown block from John to Goderich Street on the west side of Main Street will be under a boil water advisory until the end of the week. A major watermain break on Main Street, which was discovered by snowplow operators at 5:30 a.m. Friday when water was coming up through the road, caused the need for a shutdown of the watermain. As well, the road was dug up dur- ing repairs, closing Main Street down to one lane of traffic for sever- al hours. The shutdown caused negative water pressure in the system, creat- ing an automatic boil water adviso- 17 "We don't shut the main down normally but since this was the main feed into town, we had so much water we had to shut it down," says Huron East Public Works Coordinator John Forrest. In effect for five working days since last Friday, the boil water advisory means affected buildings need to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before using it to drink, gargle, brush teeth, wash food, make ice, juice, pudding or baby food/formula. Washing, bathing, showering, laundering, dishwashing can all be carried out as usual. Forrest said he feels badly about the three restaurants in the block who need to continue to do business with the boil water advisory in effect. "It's a hardship for them. It's not a major thing but it is an inconve- nience," he said.
