It's important to
shop at home
Many box stores make fools of us and we let it
happen every day.
We're fooled into believing their prices are cheap-
er on everything we buy.
We're fooled into thinking the advice they are giv-
ing us on our purchase is accurate..
We're fooled into thinking we can't get those pur-
chases anywhere else.
And we're kidding ourselves if we think we can
honestly say that we can count on good customer
service at many of these stores.
Some commissioned salespeople in these box
stores will tell you anything to make a sale.
Take a look at some of the advertisers in this
issue of The Expositor and in the weeks to come as
we head into the holiday season.
Many of them pride themselves in the lengths
they will go, to provide excellent customer service.
Expensive multi -media marketing campaigns
convince us to watch for falling prices. Did you
know many ofthose prices rise again and fluctuate?
We recognize that there simply are some products
you can't buy right in your own community and
when you make that run to the cities, it's hard to
resist making other stops and purchases of prod-
ucts you could still get right here at home.
Please consider purchasing what you can locally,
even if it seems more convenient on the surface to
grab it in the city.
And please, take a look in some of the shops right
here that you may not have visited lately or at all.
You'll be surprised by what you find inside some
of our stores with many gift ideas that you actually
won't find in the cities' box stores. -
What you can't find in stock, more often than not
can be ordered in for you much more quickly than
you might think. Several of our stores can have a
product available for you the next day.
It's hard to resist the draw to the city but under-
stand that .by making an effort to purchase what
you can in your own community, has a huge return
on your quality of life.
The city stores are not reinvesting back into
Seaforth, Brussels, Vanastra, St. Columban or
Dublin.
Our local merchants do and that goes a lot fur-
ther than we realize.

Finding the perfect gift my
way to appreciate loved ones
Having spent some time
last week with a group of
kindergarten students,
discussing the holiday sea-
son, it didn't take much
investigative journalism to
uncover what's their
favourite part of
Christmas.
They love getting gifts,
which isn't a big surprise, considering it was
probably your favourite part growing up as
well.
But as we mature that excitement diminish-
es, but it doesn't have to.
I have found a reason to get just as excited
during the holiday season.
Instead of spending hours thinking of what
I want for Christmas, now I find myself
spending hours searching for that `perfect'
gift, for someone else.
As I spent this past weekend, my last before
Dec. 25 back in Kitchener, I still had one fam-
ily member left to shop for: my dad.
I could have easily spent one hour at the
mall, picked up some chocolate, a CD, and a
nice shirt, and my dad would have been quite
happy Christmas morning.
But Christmas can be so much more than
just an opportunity to buy something nice for
someone.
It can be the one time of the year you show

someone how grateful you
are that they're part of
your life.
The holiday season can
be a time to reflect on
what someone has done
for you, or maybe, how lit-
tle you did for them, and
in -turn, say "thank you."
For most of the past
year, I lived at home, free of rent, eating lots
of the food my dad bought, but he never com-
plained.
He drove me to the doctors when I got my
wisdom teeth out, and waited there to drive
me home afterwards.
He spent his money to rent a moving truck,
and his weekend to help me move to
Seaforth.
He spent hours searching through the news-
paper, making phone calls and visiting homes,
looking for used furniture to my fill my apart-
ment.
He bought me a ticket to a Buffalo Bilis'
game and most recently, drove here to
Seaforth, switched cars with me, and before
going to work one day, took my car in and got
snow tires put on, for which he paid for half.
As you can see, I have a lot to be grateful for
when it comes to my dad.
The least I can do is spend some time,

I'm going to tell him not to bother
