Donations have started flowing
into the Huron County Christmas
Bureau at Seaforth's First
Presbyterian Church.
While three local service clubs -
the Seaforth Lions, Seaforth
Optimists and Kinburn Foresters -
have donated $500 each, the bureau
is also receiving some generous per-
sonal donations, including one from
a recent 50th birthday celebration.
Janet Buchanan, who works
behind the counter at Tucker's
Meats in Seaforth and is involved in
broomball, received over 100 gifts
and $300 in cash for the Christmas
bureau at her 50th birthday party
on Nov. 18 at the Seaforth Curling
Club.
"She turned 50 and didn't need
another thing so they brought in
cash and boxes of toys and clothing
to the bureau. I've heard different
stories of people doing this kind of
thing. Some people are choosing us
as their chanty, says bureau man-
ager Janneke Murray.
So far this year, the Seaforth
bureau is collecting for 45 registered
families with just over 100 children,
down from last year's 56 families
with 139 children. The year before
in 2003, 37 families with 79 children
registered for the Seaforth bureau.
The trend this year is a little
down from last year across the coun-
ty but who knows what will happen
the rest of the week," says Murray,
adding that Friday (Dec. 9) is likely
the last day to register for help at
the Christmas bureau.
"We'd like people to register as
soon as possible so we can make
sure we have enough for everyone
who needs it," says Murray.
While the bureau volunteers were
run off their feet when the bureau
opened Monday morning, Murray
says pick-ups still need to be made
at local schools and the hospital.
"We can't believe how much is
coming in. People are so generous,"
she says.
The Christmas bureau will be
open until Monday, Dec. 12 for drop-
offs and will then be ready for regis-
tered families to visit during the rest
of next week, beginning on Tuesday.
