Despite great distance
between continents, we

and take pictures of them.
The reality is this: the people of
this distant land are just the same
as us. We all breath the same air,
walk on the same earth, live under
the same sun. We all enjoy a
"Good morning" when we walk down
the street or a friendly wave in the
afternoon.
Although to the average eye
African and Western lives are far
apart, Bokhout has stressed that
they are so similar as well.
A' few months later, she sent
another email which was very dif-
ferent in tone than her first somber

roads, children playing freeze -tag,
and older kids teasing their younger
siblings.
Bokhout agreed that the Western
community does not know what it's
like to lose a family member to
AIDS, nor what poverty or an empty
stomach feels like.
She, however, felt the same
heartache when told a story where a
white woman hugged an African
mother who just watched her child
die from AIDS.
Bokhout explained that the chil-
dren of Lusaka love hugs and cud-
dles just as much as the children of
the West.
She showed me that even despite
the distance between our continents
and the obvious difference in skin
colour, language, and nationality,
our worlds are not that far apart.
The people of Africa are in dire
need of support, and the Western
community are the people to help
them.
Little Zambian children have tears
that are just as real as ours. And in
their need, I see that they have
many reasons to cry out.
