Seaforth's McLaughlin taking advantage of extra ice time

Presented with an opportunity for more ice time,
Seaforth's Mike McLaughlin is making the most of it
with the St. Mary's Lincolns of the Western Junior B
Hockey League.
He has recorded eight goals and 11 assists, for 27
points so far this season, which places him fourth on
the team, and 27th in the league in total points.
Where the 17 -year-old McLaughlin has really excelled
in, is shootouts, having scored all three of the Lincoln's
winning shootout goals.
"They're (shootouts are) pretty intense, there's a lot of
weight on your shoulders," he says.
McLaughlin's playing time picked up when teammate
Luke Vick of Seaforth went out with a broken bone in
his ankle back in October.
Since, McLaughlin has been an invaluable play -
maker for the team's penalty killing and power play
units, with half of his goals coming on the power play. •
"We all knew we'd have to pick up the slack, (when
Vick went out)" he says.
McLaughlin, who's a student at St. Anne's Secondary
School, admits he is worried his playing time will drop
once Vick returns later this season.
"I hope I don't get demoted," he says, "I think I've
proven myself."
"I like to come out, work hard and put the puck in the
net," says McLaughlin.
He adds that all he can continue to do is play hard
and "keep doing what I do."
It has been a turn -around season for the Lincolns,
who through 26 games are atop the league at 16-8.
"Our team gels really well together," says
McLaughlin.
He says many of players on the team are the maxi -

mum age of 20, and they bring experience to the ice.
"They know what to do with the puck and what it
takes to put it in the net," he says.
The coaching staff expects a winning season from
their players, says McLaughlin.
'They (coaches) have high expectations," he says,
adding that not just the coaches, but players, expect
the Lincolns to do well.
"If we work hard, we can make it to the finals," he
says.
