New evidence doesn't
clear Truscott, says
700 -page report
New evidence in the 1959 Lynn
Harper murder case does not clear
Steven Truscott of the crime, says a
judicial review.
The 700 -page report penned by
retired justice Fred Kaufman,
which media outlets have been
attempting to have released since
last fall, was made public recently.
"The evidence presented to me, at
its highest, does not demonstrate
innocence but only that there is a
reasonable basis to conclude that a
miscarriage of justice likely
occurred," states Kaufman.
Federal Justice Minister Irwin
Cotler had originally rebuffed
requests to have the report released
for the general public's review
because of "privacy issues."
A Truscott supporter near Clinton
said yesterday the report — though
long overdue .— confirms his
decades old belief that Truscott's
case wasn't handled properly.
"In my opinion, there's never been
any question about miscarriage of
justice," said Bob Lawson, a farmer
who was 23 when Harper's body
was found on his property. "All of
this evidence should have been
heard back in 1959 when the trail
was still warm. This is long past
due."
Kaufman's review of Truscott's
conviction already persuaded the
government to order the Ontario
Court of Appeal to reopen the case.
That appeal began in October
2004 and is not yet resolved.
Stopped for not wearing
seatbelt, Vanastra man charged
with posession
A 23 -year-old Vanastra man was charged with possession of marijana
after he was stopped by police on Nov 30 for not wearing his seatbelt.
The man's vehicle was stopped at 10 p.m. when entering Clinton and
police officers could smell the odour of marijuana .
The man is scheduled to appear in court in Goderich on Feb. 6.
Weekend accidents keep
police busy
Huron OPP officers were kept busy over the weekend as they responded
to 16 minor vehicle collisions throughout Huron County.
All collisions were a direct result of icy road conditions.
"Police wish to remind motorists that a vehicle's most vital safety fea-
ture is its driver. Please slow down according to driving conditions," says
Const. Jeff Walraven.
