That store is called Memories, and is located on Seaforth's Main Street. Laverne says the store is "a fun thing to do instead of sitting around and letting arthritis kick in," he jokes. Aside from their vast collection of hockey cards and memorabilia, they also sell collector plates, stuffed ani- mals, beanie babies, videos, includ- ing many from Disney, and books, totally somewhere around 25-30 thousand items, Audrey guesses. "If you're looking for something from the past, we just might have it," says Laverne. He adds that quite a few people from the area already know to come to him if they're looking for new sports cards. "Anything that is on the market, (in sports cards) we'll sell," he says. Seaforth residents for the past 12 years, Laverne and Audrey sold cards out of an extension to their Victorian style home on Goderich Street. In June of 2002, the couple moved into the apartment next door to their current location, where they • sold their merchandise out of a transport truck out back. Just last month they moved into the apartment behind their new store. "It is the first opportunity to reach people who don't know what I do," says Laverne: His collection began only 18 years ago, when he picked up a card col- lectors' starter kit in Stratford. Ever since his collection has continued to grow. The couple realize their store isn't going to make them rich, and that's just fine with them. "We're not here to give Walmart any competition," jokes Audrey, "just to enjoy ourselves." Audrey looks forward to getting_to know those in the community. "I look forward to socializing with the people, and them sharing their memories." She says people have already come in to the store and seen some- thing that reminds them of a time in the past, and that has sparked a convefsation.
