Seaforth's success
at radiothon being studied
by area hospital foundations
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
Hospital foundations across the midwestern
Ontario region are looking to the success of
Seaforth's first year in the CKNX Radiothon
for ideas for improvement of next year's cam-
paign.
"We were the only ones that made it an
ongoing event and the other foundations were
interested that we did," organizer Sheila
Morton told the quarterly meeting between
the Seaforth hospital and Huron East.
Morton, vice -chair of the Local Advisory
Committee (LAC) of Seaforth Community
Hospital (SCH), said other foundations cau-
tioned her not to be disappointed if SCH did
not reach its goal of $25,000 during its first
year participating in the CKNX Health Care
Heroes Radiothon.
She added they found it remarkable that
Seaforth raised $46,000, with 94 per cent of
the pledges paid up the day of the radiothon.
"Most found they had to wait. But, thanks
to the setup at the Legion, our pledges came
in that day," she said.
"It was a tremendous idea to make it a com-
munity event. Obviously, people were gener-
ous, partly because we made it fun," said Dick
Burgess, one of Seaforth's two representatives
on the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance
board.
SCH site administrator Mary Cardinal said
she was gratified by the number of local per-
formers who committed their Saturday to
helping the hospital raise money.
"That speaks a lot to the community sup-
port," she said.
Cardinal also praised the women of the
Legion who kept the refreshments replen-
ished.
"I was delighted to see Anne Wood nominat-
ed for the citizenship award because it
demonstrates how important the Legion is,"
added Burgess.
Huron East Mayor Joe Seili asked how
much more needs to be raised to be able to
buy the $125,000 Computerized Radiology
(CR) reader for the local x-ray machine.
Morton said the fundraising campaign is
"more than halfway there" with about $50,000
left to fundraise.
"The doctors want the CR reader right away
but we need more money - $50,000 would be a
great Christmas present for the hospital," she
said.

You may think that only older people
need to worry about getting the flu.
But who do you think they get it from?
Perhaps the only thing worse than getting the flu is giving it to someone close to
you. Especially someone for whom the flu can lead to very serious complications.
So make sure you protect yourself and others close to you by getting your free flu
shot. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or local public health unit.
