Vanastra poet dedicates collection to W.B. Yeats
Susan Hundertmark
In a somewhat poetic coincidence,
Ronda Wicks Eller discovered a dis-
tant relationship to Irish poet WB.
Yeats at the same time she started
to study his work.
"I had started to experiment with
rhyme and meter and a friend told
me the poetry looked a lot like
Yeats' and told me to read him,"
says the Vanastra writer.
"Then, I found out while research-
ing my genealogy that I'm related to
Yeats very distantly," she says.
Eller is currently launching a col-
lection of poems called Whale Songs
in the Aurora Borealis which is ded-
icated tothe memory of William
Butler Yeats and her late husband
David Eller.
She will be at Crossroads in
Clinton this Sunday, Dec. 11
from 1-4 p.m. selling her new
book.
While the subject matter
ranges from growing up to
relationships to Ireland and
Irish mythology, Eller says
the common thread is Yeats'
poetic style and a preoccupa-
tion with spirituality.
"The only whale reference
is in the title poem. The
whole book is about man
reaching out to the cosmos
and reaching for unity, like a
whale song, which is a beauti-
ful but unknown sound," she
says.
While this is Eller's second
book of poetry, she says she's
found
working
with Yeats'
poetic
style and
learning
about his
life a great
inspira-
tion.
And, at
times, she
admits she
almost felt
inhabited by
Yeats while writ-
ing her poems.

"I sat there after-
wards and thought, 'Who
wrote that? Him or me?'" she
recalls, reading the last
stanza of the poem "So listen
closely, feel the words fall
from my pen into your ears:
I have returned, I said I
would, to the sister -brother -
sisterhood!"
Eller says the poems
also explore a fascination
with spirituality, reincarna-
tion and Eastern religions
that she shares with Yeats.
"This book is a whale
of a ride, encompassing
dimensions of time and spir-
it. You will want to pick up
your flute and follow the
mystery of exploration that
will lead you to your own
inner music. Our archetypes
and daemons are all here to
confront you in a classic
Celtic saga through the
knot -work of a spirit sea,"
says reviewer Katherine L.
Gordon.
And, while she moves
back in time to Yeats, she
says the poetry was also
influenced by the internet
and technology.
"The internet has boosted what a
poet can achieve. You used to share
your poetry with a few people you
know but with a computer, you get
instant feedback from around the
world," she says.
"The exposure is so different - the
internet has made poetry a global
art," says Eller.
And, when she hits writer's block,
Eller says the internet helps to get
her writing more quickly.
"The other writers out there keep
you in the flow," she says.
Along with publishing, Eller says
the internet helps her to share her
art.
"What's the sense of collecting it
at home without sharing it? People
who hear it, love it. Why hide it?"
