Bob Fisher went through boxes of kleenex, moved by the response of the Seaforth community to a blood donor clinic in memory of his son Mackenzie on Monday. "It's been a hard day but a good day," said Bob, who was on hand to talk to donors at the Seaforth arena a day after a memorial service and the same week as Mackenzie's birthday. Mackenzie, who died from leukemia at age 18 in September, was the inspiration for close to a dozen first-time blood donors and numerous lapsed donors who hadn't given blood for close to five years. "They (clinic organizers) said they were booked solid," said Bob, who added he'd talked to four first- time donors during the afternoon. His wife Sandra said she was grateful for the response to the clinic. "We'll do anything we can do to promote the clinic," she said of their attendance at the event. A request from the Fisher family in Mackenzie's obituary that community members become regular blood donors as a tribute to their son gave organizer Nancy Denham the idea to hold the clinic in his .memory. Denham said donors had been filling out cards from Canadian Blood Services all day, with close to 90 cards conveying their thoughts and messages to the Fisher family. Erin Brydon, of Canadian Blood Services, said the Seaforth clinic collected 146 units of blood, two more than the target of 144. In that total, 17 were first- time donors.
