CBC arts reporter lends her voice to A Christmas
Carol reading at St. Thomas Anglican- Church

CBC Radio National Arts
Reporter Marsha Lederman will
join four local readers when Charles
Dickens' A Christmas Carol will be
offered at St. Thomas Anglican
Church in Seaforth on Dec. 10 at
7:30 p.m.
The event, organized by Huron
Hospice and the Huron United Way,
could become an annual event in
town, says organizer Janis Bisback.
"This is a really down-to-earth
way of starting the Christmas sea-
son. What a wonderful way to begin
the holiday season with someone
reading a story to a captive audi-
ence," she says.
The reading will be from the origi-
nal story Dickens wrote in five
"staves" or chapters and performed
as an evening's entertainment.
In December of 1989, Judy
Maddren a broadcaster with CBC
Radio and her family had the oppor-
tunity to read the complete
Christmas Carol. She realized that
once we grow up, we usually leave
behind the pleasure of being read
to, and with that thought, imagined
reading "A Christmas Carol" to
adults, says the CBC website.
With the support of her colleagues
at CBC radio, Maddren set about
mounting a public reading with
music.
She organized the first public

From that one successful night
the event has grown dramatically
and now is presented by CBC Radio,
in conjunction with local partners,
in over 110 communities across
Canada (as well as readings in the
United States) for the benefit of
local charities similar in nature to
those Charles Dickens himself pro-
moted: children, literacy, less fortu-
nate families, education for all, and
health care.
While the readings have been per-
formed throughout Huron County in
Goderich, Bayfield and Brussels,
this is the first time for Seaforth.
Bisback says she jumped at the
NOTICE
opportunity to get Huron Hospice
involved when the reading was
held last year in Goderich.
"(Goderich Signal -Star editor) Rob
Bundy joined us and began by read-
ing chapter one. He portrayed the
characters in such a wonderful
manner, if you closed your eyes you
could see them standing right there
in the room," she says.
The readers from Seaforth include
Yvonne Kitchen, Tom Melady, Nick
Vandermay and Kim Payne.
Bisback says there will be musical
performers between each stave,
including Melissa Marion on piano,
Cheryl St Onge on piano and vocals,
as well as vocalist Laura Elligsen.
Tickets are $10 each.
