Bluewater Recycling, which services homes in most of Huron, Perth, Middlesex, and Lambton Counties, have been hit by the rising cost of fuel. In a letter to the munici- palities, president of Bluewater Recycling Francis Veilleux said, "Unfortunately, we saw a fuel cost increase that yaw.w44w01t*-tttp' er merry bre as ►, with Santa. That 38 per cent trans- lated into $693,000 a year on fuel, up from $530,000. The rising fuel costs directly affect Bluewater Recycling, who use many vehicles that operate strictly off diesel fuel. They were also hit by an increase in fuel sur- charges from their suppli- ers, in addition to an increase in disposal fees. In his letter Veilleux said they expect the same results for 2006, especially with the new engines soon to be installed on their trucks, that while reduc- ing emissions, consume more fuel. Bluewater Recycling hope to counter these costs with a grant worth around $250,000 from Waste Division Ontario, a branch of the Ministry of Environment. But in his letter, Veilleux emphasized that the grant money is not guaranteed. The rising fuel costs will result in an increase in the per household price for the service, from $42.14 to $45.65, which the individ- ual municipality pays for. The number could be lower depending on whether Bluewater Recycling receives a grant from WDO. The price each munici- pality pays for the service varies, depending on the number of homes in the municipality, what kind of servioe they receive, whether it's weekly or bi- weekly, and if it's curbside or a depot pickup. In Huron East, the year- ly cost for the service will go up from $151, 224 to $164, 551, an increase of 8.33 per cent.
