Seaforth children helping third world kids again
Egmondville United and St. James
School donate to Operation
Christmas Child another year
Seaforth chil-
dren are again
helping children
in the Third
World this year
through
Operation
Christmas
Child.
Operation
Christmas
Child, run by
Samaritan's
Purse, is an ini-
tiative that
focuses on pro-
viding children
of Third Wofld
countries with
every day items
and toys for the
festive season.
The students
of St. James
School have
been filling
shoeboxes for
two years in the
program.
"Samaritan's
Purse sent us an
information
video to show
what kids would
need, and we
showed it to the
kids," said Mary
Brown, principal
of St. James.

"Useful things,
but also small
simple toys,"
said Brown.
"But not war
toys, like G. I.
Joe."
This opportu-
nity sparked an
interest in the
students, Brown
agreed.
"They really
enjoy it because
it's so personal,'
she said.
Last year, St.
James collected
120 shoeboxes.
This year, they
collected 113.
"We are very
happy with the
result," said
Brown.
"It's also a fam-
ily thing.
Families can go
out together to
the dollar store
and purchase
the toys. It's
popular with the
kids," she said.
Egmondville
United Church
collected the last
of their shoebox-
es recently as
the church par-
ticipated for the
fifth year in
Operation
Christmas
Child.
Pastor Steve
Hildebrand said
more than 100
shoeboxes were
collected.
While the
church took a
break from
Samaritan's
Purse last year
and sent dona-
tions instead to
the Goderich
women's shelter,
Hildebrand said
families belong-
ing to
Egmondville
United look for-
ward to the pro-
ject each year.
"People get
quite involved
and caught up in
what you can fit
in a shoebox.
They have a lot
of fun with it,"
he said, adding
that he often
overhears a lot
of conversations
of people shar-
ing the various
items they man-
aged to squeeze
into their shoe -
boxes.
As well, he.
said the project
is popular
because young
children find
shopping for
other children
more meaning-
ful than donat-
ing money.
"Little kids
just don't under-
stand writing a
cheque," he said.
