Seaforth Community Hospital getting facelift
$350,000 recladding project will put new exterior on two-thirds of hospital

iiiMENEED
Seaforth Community Hospital is
receiving a major facelift this winter
as a $350,000 recladding project
will put a new exterior on two-
thirds of the building.
Members of the Seaforth Local
Advisory Committee heard from
Chuck Meyer, manager of building
services for the Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance at a meeting
Monday that the project will begin
within the week.
"The entire project
should be done by May
1," he said.
Meyer said the oldest
section of the hospital,
built in 1964, will have
its brickwork covered
by an exterior insula-
tion system that will
have a stucco -like
appearance.
"Right now, there's no
vapour barrier and
moisture gets behind
the brick, freezes and
blows the brick off the
wall," he said.
The new exterior will
add two inches of insu-
lation, giving the build-
ing an R value (thermal
resistance) of 15.
The newest section of
the hospital, the emer-
gency ward -and the
entrance of the building
built in 1989, does not
need the recladding,
said Meyer.
"The new part of the
building is in good
shape and it wasn't
warranted," he said.
Meyer said the
Alliance is committed to
maintaining the small-
er hospital buildings
and is "making signifi-
cant capital invest-
ments" on them.
The recladding in
Seaforth, which has
been in the planning
stages for four years,
will be split over two
fiscal years.
LAC vice -chair Sheila
Morton joked that the
construction on the hos-
pital could fuel the
rumour mill.
"I'm sure everyone
will know we're repair-
ing the building and not
tearing it down," she
said.
"That'll be the rumour
on the street,"
agreed Meyer.
He said a simi-
lar rumour that
Clinton Public
Hospital would
close went
through Clinton
when the
Alliance replaced
a 1964 boiler sys-
tem at CPH over
the summer.
"The rumour
was
'I'm sure everyone will
know we're repairing the
building and not tearing it
down,' --
Sheila Morton,
of Seaforth LAC
that we ripped
out the heat-
ing system
and were
closing the
hospital," he
said.
A sig-
nage project,
which will
update signs
at the four
,% Alliance hos-
pitals starting
in Clinton next week, could also add
to the rumour, said site administra-
tor Mary Cardinal.
"Construction equipment here and
changing the signs - just image that
rumour," she said.
The new signs will use the Huron
Perth Healthcare Alliance's tree
logo, along with each hospital's
name and change the emergency
department's signs to show a red
background.

ENTRY
A turreted upstairs room and a roundel window lend this two
storey, three-bedroom family home a touch of Victorian grace.
Entry is through a covered porch and into a compact foyer. A
coat closet in on the right, just past the door to the den, which
has a closet and could serve as a. home office or as a spare
bedroom. The rest of the ground floor is unfinished, although a
three-piece bathroom has been roughed in. Up a flight of stairs
is the main floor — really the second floor: To the left is a
combined great room -dining area. The great room features a
bayed -out area under the turret and a fireplace, while the dining
area has an optional built-in buffet.
