Festival Hydro offering exchange
for energy-efficient LED lights
Ashley Eddie
41111111111,
For Christmas this year, cus-
tomers of Festival Hydro Inc. will be
able 'to exchange their old
Christmas lights for new multi-
coloured LED lights.
The free exchange for energy-effi-
cient lights will be taking place at
three different locations and dates.
The first will be at the Festival
Hydro Service Centre in Seaforth on
Friday Nov 25, the day of the town
Santa Claus Parade. Drop-off times
will be between 3 - 7 p.m. at 35 Oak
St.
If you cannot make it this day,
there is a drop off at the Festival
Hydro Inc. Headquarters, 187 Erie
St., Stratford on Saturday, Nov. 26
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A third drop off is also set to be at
the Public Works Yard, 433 Widder
Street, East, St. Marys on Friday,
Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3 from 9
a.m. to 1 p.m.
Festival Hydro has been looking
to reduce Canada's greenhouse gas
emissions and save electricity.
LED lights, or Light Emitting
Diode lights, are energy efficient.
One strand of incandescent lights
uses approximately 150 watts of
energy, while a strand of LED lights
uses less than 5 watts.
The annual energy savings is
roughly 26 kilowatt hours per string
per year.
"I think people are really getting
excited about this," said Irene
McInnes, Billing
and Collections
Manager for
Festival Hydro.
"People see
that if everyone
in Ontario
switches to light
emitting diode
Christmas lights
than we can have
a big impact on
energy savings."
Using six
strands of LED
Christmas lights,
a consumer could save $14.04 on
his hydro bill (or $2.34 per strand).
LED lights last up to 200,000
hours and are virtually unbreak-
able.
Begun as a provincial initiative,
Festival Hydro is trying to give the
community a way to help reduce the
amount of electricity consumption.
"If we can get everyone to think in
this conserving mode, we won't need
to use that much electricity," said
McInnes.
There are limited quantities of
LED lights at each location, so a
maximum of two strings of lights
will be exchanged per family. This
offer is also just for customers of
Festival Hydro Inc.
Bill Zehr, president of Festival
Hydro Inc. said in a press release,
"We need to be serious about saving
energy. If everyone does their part,
we will make a difference."
