Police urge caution during hunting season
Recent accident in Morris-Turnberry could have been prevented, says OPP officer
Jeff H e u c h e r i
With the hunting season not yet over, the OPP
want to remind not just hunters, but bikers and
joggers, to be careful around bush areas where
hunting occurs.
This comes days after a hunting accident in
Morris-Turnberry resulted in one hunter being
shot in the knee from the shotgun of another
hunter. -
Although the accident wasn't the result of
hunters not wearing the mandatory orange
clothing, it could have been prevented, says com-
munity service officer Jeff Walraven.
"You should never have your finger on the trig-
ger until you're 100 per cent sure of the animal,
and that you have a safe surrounding area," he
says.
He adds that hunters need to be wary of having
`tunnel vision', where they don't see surrounding
movement.
Walraven says if hunters are going to shoot and
think there might be something around, they
should put the gun down.
"There's lots of deer around, you'll get another
shot," Walraven says.
Not just hunters need to think about safety,
according to Walraven.
Because most hunting occurs in areas with
dense bush, where vision can easily be blocked,
jogging or biking near these areas can be danger-
ous.
Walraven suggests if you're passing by a bush
area where hunting occurs, to be loud and wear
bright clothing so you're noticed by the hunters.
Walraven says a passerby may not be hit
directly by a bullet, but could still be injured
from a ricocheting bullet.
For the most part, hunters adhere to the rules
says Walraven. "There's a tremendous amount of
responsible hunters out there."
But for those hunters who do not follow the
rules there are fines.
Under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act,
if caught not wearing
the proper coloured
hunting clothing, you
can be fined up to $125.
Caught firing a
weapon on or across a
traveled roadway
results in fines ranging
between $240 and
$305.

A hunting accident is
still under investiga-
tion after a 32 -year-old
Huron East man was
shot in the knee by a
57 -year-old Huron East
man on Nov. 8 in
Morris-Turnberry.
Close to 10 deer
hunters were hunting
in a field near St.
Michaels Road, east of
London Road, with half
pushing the deer
through the bush and
the other half waiting
at the edge.
As a deer left the
bush, one hunter, 50
metres away but out of
the sight of another
hunter, shot at the deer
using a 12 -gauge pump
action shotgun.
The 32 -year-old was
shot in the knee with
some of the pellets. He
was transported to the
Wingham Hospital
with non -life threaten-
ing injuries, received
medical attention and
was kept over night for
observation.
