Pesticide collection service lets
farmers get rid of outdated product
Local farmers looking to get rid of
old or outdated pesticide can take
advantage of an opportunity that
comes around once every five years
next week.
Brussels Agromart is one of 13
depots across the province for the
Ontario Waste Agricultural Pesticide
Collection program, a free service
offered Nov. 22 and 23 by CropLife
Canada, the Ontario Ministry of the
Environment and Environment
Canada.
"We've done this once before five
years ago and it allows the farm sec-
tor to bring in unregistered, unwant-
ed and outdated pesticides so they
can be incinerated. It's very good for
the environment," says Brussels
Agromart owner Merle Hoegy.
Hoegy says farmers most likely to
need the sery-ice when a farm
changes hands and old product has
been found in storage.
While he's not certain how many
farmers might take advantage of the
program, he says he could receive
quantities ranging from one bottle to
a skidful.
"It's a really nice way to get rid of
pesticide. There really isn't any other
way to get rid of it otherwise," he

says.
Hoegy says local farmers have
been inquiring if the pesticide collec-
tion service will
be offered again.
"Just put it in
your pick-up and
drop it off and
we'll get rid of it
for you," he says.
