E -waste now recycled at Walton landfill

McKillop and Grey residents will
have two more opportunities to
recycle when the Walton Landfill
begins offering depots to recycle
electronic equipment and white
plastic bale wrap this week.
E -waste, which includes computer
equipment and household appli-
ances, will be picked up by a
Stratford firm called Stack It and
Pack It.
Huron East Deputy -Clerk Brad
Knight says he discovered the firm
when visiting the Mitchell landfill
site where e -waste is recycled.
"Up until now, we had no way to
recycle it. For example, computer
monitors are glass, plastic and
metal. What do you do with it?
Usually, it just gets rammed in the
basement," he says.
The Stratford recycling company
employs disabled adults who recov-
er and recycle the component parts.
Knight says the e -waste will be
stored in a 21 -foot van body with
roll -up doors at the Walton landfill.
And, while the Walton landfill is
for the use of McKillop and Grey
residents, Knight
says the munici-
pality will be
finding ways to
accept e -waste
from other resi-
dents of Huron
East.

puter equipment

"I think if we get the message to
farmers, most will do their utmost
to keep it relatively clean. A lot of
people are burning the wrap now
and it shouldn't be burned," says
Knight.
So far, Morris-Turnberry and
Howick are the only other munici-
palities in Huron County to offer
bale wrap recycling.
Knight says recycling has been
offered at the Walton landfill since
1988 when household materials
began to be collected. The program
evolved into the blue box collection
system provided by Bluewater
Recycling.
