Huron Expositor, 2005-11-09, Page 28Page 28 November 9, 2005 • The Huron Expositor News Local federal candidates ready for December election Cheryl Heath GEMEMBEND Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle believes Canadians do not want a ballot in their stockings for Christmas while the top contenders for the incumbent's position aren't so sure. In an interview Friday, before NDP leader Jack Layton announced his party could no longer sup- port the Liberals, the 12 -year veteran of federal politics suggested calling an election before rec- ommendations of the Gomery report are released in February would be an error. "If they did, it would be their demise," he says. "People don't want an election right now." Steckle adds that an April 3 or 10 election is likely after recommendations are issued in February from the Gomery report's findings. Grant Robertson, an NDP candidate for Huron - Bruce and a Paisley -area farmer and librarian, believes Canadians are ready to head to the polls. "The party has to be held accountable," says Robertson of the recent Gomery report findings. "I think this is an indictment of the Liberal party." Whether an election is called for Christmas fol- lowing a possible no confidence vote on a Liberal bill or in the spring has yet to be seen, says Robertson, who says he does not have a prefer- ence. And, he adds, this election will prove to be a contest between the Liberal and New Democratic parties. "I've heard people say Steckle doesn't deliver," he says. "He is just not able to do the kind of things we need to do." Ben Lobb, the Conservative Party of Canada candidate and a Wescast Inc. employee and fami- ly businessman, notes he was listening to CBC radio Tuesday morning and heard the last feder- al election held in December was in 1917 during the midst of the First World War. The voter turnout was a whopping 75 per cent. And that, says Lobb, is one good reason to hold a Christmastime election. He notes in contrast a spring election would be unlikely to draw the votes of snowbirds and farmers who would be in the heart of planting season. "Usually in December, most people are at home," says Lobb, adding the only tough job would be for the candidates who would have to trudge through the snow to court the public. That's a challenge Lobb is willing to take on. Either way, says Lobb, he is reading to vie for the seat. "We're ready to go in Huron -Bruce," he says. * Agricultural * Residential * Commercial * Pole Line Construction Raid* ifkidog ELECTRIC R.R. #4 Seaforth, Ont.
