Building future community volun- teers is the focus of a new project recognizing student service at Seaforth Public School. Service awards, which include a certificate and a small stuffed bear to represent the school's bear cub mascot, are being given for the first time this year to students who vol- unteer for at least six weeks. Grade 7 student Devon Simpson is one of 26 students who were rec- ognized recently for service to the school community. "Mr. V. (Grade 7 teacher Ron Vercruyssen) asked for volunteers to do recycling and I raised my hand," he says. Simpson, with two other students, took on the job of collecting paper and cans throughout the school once a week. "The paper can get heavy and the cans can get messy but I like the job because you get to walk around and be active," he says. Hailey Maxwell and Joelle Glanville, both in Grade 7, were recognized for helping out in the school office over the lunch Church Services You are invited to attend these area churches St. Thomas Anglican Church A Congregation of the Parish of The Holy Spirit Jarvis St. Seaforth 527-1522 • Rector: The Revd Sue Matpus. "At first, it was hard because we didn't know what we were doing," adds Glanville. While their six weeks in the front office is over, the girls say they've vol- unteered with other teachers who need some help. Grade 5 student Claire McFadzean received a service award for giving up her recess as she helps to pack Grade 1 backpacks with story- books. "I asked to help. It's not hard," she says. SPS principal Kim Black says the staff decided to create the ser- vice awards to take the school's focus on virtues Susan Hundertmark photo Grade 7 student at Seaforth Public School Joelle Glanville was recognized for her help in the school office over the lunch hour with a Service award one step further. "The children are always provid- ing service to the school - as lunch room monitors, outside buddies, office helpers and hamster cage cleaners - and we wanted to recog- nize that," she says.
